24/04/2024Surfboard Maintenance: Do's & Don'ts For Keeping Your Board in Top Shape
Whether you're a seasoned surfer or just dipping your toes into the world of surf, one thing is certain: surfboard maintenance is essential. Taking care of your board can make all the difference in how it rides and how long it lasts. In this guide, Stoked Surf School explores the top surfboard dos & don'ts to help you keep your board in great shape, along with common pitfalls to avoid. By applying these tips and best practices, you'll ensure that your trusty surfboard remains your faithful companion in the water for years to come.
Surfboard Maintenance Do's
Rinse Your Surfboard After Each Session
After a surf session, rinsing your board with fresh water is essential to remove salt, sand, and debris that can accumulate on the surface. Saltwater can corrode materials, while sand and debris can scratch or damage the board's finish. By carefully rinsing your board, you prevent these contaminants from causing long-term damage and maintain its appearance and performance.
Store Your Board in a Cool, Dry Place
Proper storage is crucial for surfboard maintenance. It will preserve your surfboard's integrity and performance. Storing it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight helps prevent heat damage, warping, and delamination. Exposure to sunlight can cause materials to degrade over time, leading to discoloration, weakening of the resin, and reduced buoyancy. By storing your board indoors or in a shaded area, you prolong its lifespan and ensure consistent performance.
Inspect Your Board Often for Damage
Regular inspections allow you to identify and address any damage or issues before they worsen. Look for dings, cracks, or delamination on the board's surface, paying close attention to high-impact areas like the nose, tail, and rails. Addressing minor damage with repairs prevents water ingress, structural weaknesses, and performance issues. Regular maintenance & repairs ensure your board remains safe, reliable, and enjoyable to ride.
Apply Surf Wax Regularly
Surf wax not only improves your grip on the board but also protects the deck from sun damage and water saturation. Applying wax in a crisscross pattern provides traction and enhances your control while riding waves. Over time, wax can wear off or become less effective, especially in warm water or high-usage conditions. By reapplying wax and removing old layers often, you maintain optimal grip, performance, and protection for your board.
Use Proper Protection During Transport
Whether you're driving to your local break or traveling for a surf trip, proper board transport is essential for preventing damage. Padded board bags or surfboard socks offer cushioning and protection against impacts, scratches, and dings during transit. Securing your board to your vehicle's roof rack or inside your vehicle prevents shifting, sliding, or damage en route. By investing in quality transport accessories and taking care during transit, you ensure your board arrives safely & ready to ride.
Surfboard Maintenance Don'ts
Leave Your Surfboard in Direct Sunlight
Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause significant damage to your surfboard's materials and finish. UV rays can degrade resin, weaken fiberglass, and cause discoloration or fading of graphics. Heat buildup can lead to delamination, warping, or bubbling of the board's surface. Avoid leaving your board in the sun for extended periods, especially on hot days, to preserve its appearance, integrity, and performance.
Lean Your Board Against Sharp or Hard Objects
Leaning your surfboard against sharp or hard objects increases the risk of dings, dents, and scratches. Even minor impacts can cause cosmetic damage or compromise the board's structural integrity. Avoid leaning your board against rocks, walls, or other surfaces that could cause abrasions or punctures. Instead, use padded racks, stands, or storage solutions designed specifically for surfboards to protect them from accidental damage.
Use Excessive Force When Applying or Removing Surf Wax
Applying and removing surf wax should be done with care to avoid damaging the board's surface. Excessive force can gouge or scrape the deck, leaving marks or removing the board's finish. Use gentle, even pressure when waxing your board to achieve an even coat and optimal grip. When removing old wax, use a wax comb or scraper with caution to avoid scratching or gouging the deck. By handling waxing and dewaxing with care, you maintain your board's appearance and performance.
Transport Your Board Without Proper Protection
Transporting your surfboard without adequate protection increases the risk of damage during transit. Without padding or cushioning, your board is vulnerable to impacts, scratches, and dents from bumps or movements. Secure your board firmly to your vehicle's roof rack or inside your vehicle using straps or tie-downs to prevent shifting or sliding. Use padded board bags or surfboard socks to provide cushioning and protection against external forces. By prioritising proper transport protection, you ensure your board arrives at its destination safe, intact, and ready for action.
Make It Easy For Thieves
Whilst not essential for surfboard maintenance, we felt it necessary to include this tip. Unfortunately we live in a world where not everyone shares the same good vibes we do. Unattended surfboards are often a target for someone looking to make quick, dirty money & this is true the world over. It's never a good idea to leave your surfboard alone whilst you grab a post-surf snack or drink, so take it with you or leave it with people you trust.
Also, investing in secure, lockable straps is a fantastic option if you're attaching your surfboard to the roof of your car. Whilst they may not stop the most determined board snatcher, the sight of them alone is often enough to make most look elsewhere for an easier target.
As surfers, our connection to the ocean is deeply intertwined with our boards. By following our advice, you not only prolong the life of your board but also enhance your surfing experience. From regular rinsing and inspection to proper storage & transport, every step you take to care for your surfboard is an investment in your surfing journey. So, next time you wax up your board or strap it onto your roof rack, remember these tips and treat your board with the love and respect it deserves.
