What makes you Perranporth's premium surf school?
With (at time of writing) over 700 combined 5-Star reviews from Google and TripAdvisor, we are an award-winning surf school that prides itself on providing first-class surf lessons with high-quality surf gear for use throughout, or for hire!
Stoked Surf School's located right next to the beach, complete with indoor changing facilities, showers, secure lockups and hot & cold drink availability in our chill-out areas (indoors and outdoors) for that post-surf recovery.
We're also proud of our bespoke Loop system, which tracks a surf student's progress along their surf journey. With this in place, anyone who takes a surf lesson with Stoked Surf School can work on their technique, consistently improving as they progress through the system.
Is there parking at the surf school?
We are located next to the main beach car park in Perranporth aka. Car Park on the Promenade (TR6 0JN), which is on the famous South West Coast Path!
Where do we meet?
We meet at our base of operations; Stoked Surf School which is located within the old Men's Institute building. This is where you will get changed and get ready for your lesson. There are no lockers but we do provide a storage box for you to put your belongings in. There is no need to bring any valuables with you, but if you want we can always store precious items.
Will the lesson still run if it's wet, or windy, or both?
A bit of rain will not stop us. Surfing in the rain is actually quite nice - once you're wet, you’re wet! That being said, if the weather or sea conditions make it too unsuitable to surf then we will give you a call just as soon as we can to let you know. Also, Julian usually runs a daily surf report from Perranporth Beach on the
Stoked Instagram page. Be sure to check that out!
What do I need to bring with me?
Please arrive with your swimwear on underneath your clothes This saves a lot of time changing as we only have limited space. Also don’t forget a towel, sunscreen and plenty of enthusiasm.
What is the minimum age for surfing?
We love teaching groms (kids) so when you hit your 7th birthday its on!
Can I bring my medical equipment down to the lesson with me?
100%. In fact, on your registration form we ask you if you have any medical requirements. The coaches always take down a waterproof bag for you to put anything that you may need while on the lesson.
Do I have to carry my boards from the shop to the beach?
No. We have a lock up just a few minutes walk from the shop, which is a stones throw away from the surf. From here you will collect your surfboards and walk down to the surfing area. If you want, you can bring some flip-flops to walk down the path to the lock up from the shop.
I'm scared of stepping on a weeverfish - Are they dangerous?
Ah, the dreaded weeverfish. Yes, they do lurk, particularly in the summer months at low tide, and some people are unfortunate to stand on them which is more annoying than painful. They are not particularly dangerous and if you do get stung then putting your foot in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes normally does the trick. We would say if you are concerned about stepping on one then let us know and we can give you a pair of boots. But would it stop us from ever going surfing? Absolutely not.
Is there somewhere to grab a coffee or a bite to eat before or after my lesson?
Perranporth is your typical seaside town, with a wide range of places to eat and drink and just about anything else you may need for a great day on the beach. Just make sure you have enough time to take it all in and relax on one of Cornwall’s biggest and most beautiful beaches at over 2.2 miles long.
Is the beach dog friendly?
Yes, in fact he whole of Perranporth is very dog friendly and dogs are permitted on the beach all year round. However, during the months of July and August, your furry friends will need to be on a short lead on the main part of the beach but are allowed to run wild past this point.
Do I need to be a competent swimmer?
No, not for beginner/ improver lessons as we only go out to waist to chest depth water. In fact, we have had some people who cannot swim at all. However, if you are worried about this then perhaps you would be more suited to a Private lesson with your very own surf coach. Either way we would love to hear from you.
How can you assure that we will be safe?
We take safety very seriously at stoked surf school and keeping everyone safe aswell as having fun is our top priority. All of our coaches are qualified lifeguards and ISA / Surfing England coaches. On top of this the surf school is accredited by Surfing England which is the national governing body for surfing. Finally, all of the coaches are competent surfers with many years of water knowledge and experience. On top of this Perranporth is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards from April to October so yes I would say that you are in safe hands.
