Family Surf Lessons In Perranporth

Time for the kids to put the phones down and get in the sea. Our family surf lessons run daily from Perranporth Beach, come rain or shine, for children aged 7 to 16. Mums and dads don't get off that easily either, we'd much rather you were out there with them.

Family lessons run as open group sessions alongside other families and individuals, and we never go above a coach to surfer ratio of 1:8. Everyone gets kit, everyone gets two hours in the water, and everyone gets the same qualified coaching. If your children are under 7, a private lesson is the better fit and we can sort that instead.

We're the only surf school in Perranporth with a permanent base on the beach, so you've got indoor changing, hot showers, secure storage and a chill-out area with a coffee machine for afterwards. Not a car boot and a damp towel.

What does the session look like?

Arrive — get changed at our base in the old Men's Institute building, kit fitted for every family member
The walk down — collect boards from our lock-up, a few minutes from the shop and a stone's throw from the surf
On the sand — safety brief and technique, kept short so you're not standing about
In the water — the bulk of the two hours, waist to chest depth, coaches in with you
After — indoor chill-out area, hot showers and a coffee while everyone dries off

Family Surf Lesson Frequently Asked Questions

What age can my child start surfing?

We love teaching groms, so when they hit their 7th birthday it's on. Under 7s are welcome on a private lesson instead, where they get their own coach.

Do parents have to get in the water?

No, but we'd love you to. Family lessons work best when everyone's in it together, and it's usually the parents who surprise themselves.

Does my child need to be able to swim?

Not for beginner and improver lessons. We only go out to waist to chest depth. We've taught plenty of people who can't swim at all. If you're worried, a private lesson might suit better.

How long is a family surf lesson?

Two hours, and all the equipment is included.

What do we need to bring?

Swimwear on under your clothes, a towel, sunscreen and plenty of enthusiasm. That's it.

Will the lesson run if it rains?

A bit of rain won't stop us, once you're wet you're wet. If the sea conditions genuinely aren't suitable we'll ring you as soon as we can.

Can we keep the boards after the lesson?

Yes. For £15 each you can hang onto the board and wetsuit for the rest of the day and keep practising.

Is there anywhere to change and store our things?

Yes. We're based in the old Men's Institute right by the beach with indoor changing, showers and a storage box for your belongings. No lockers, so leave valuables at home, though we can look after anything precious.
