Frequently Asked Questions

Is there parking at the surf school?
There is no actual parking at the surf school but there are numerous car parks in the village. The closest one to Stoked surf school is Wheal Leisure car park in Perranporth (postcode: TR5 0EY).
Where do we meet?
We meet at Coastal Surf on Perranporth high street (postcode: TR6 0BJ). This is where you will get changed and get ready for your lesson. There are no lockers but we do provide a storage box for you to put your belongings in. There is no need to bring any valuables with you, but if you want we can always store precious items.
Will the lesson still run if it's wet, or windy, or both?
A bit of rain will not stop us. Surfing in the rain is actually quite nice - once you're wet, you’re wet! That being said, if the weather or sea conditions make it too unsuitable to surf then we will give you a call just as soon as we can to let you know.
What do I need to bring with me?
Please arrive with your swimwear on underneath your clothes This saves a lot of time changing as we only have limited space. Also don’t forget a towel, sunscreen and plenty of enthusiasm.
What is the minimum age for surfing?
We love teaching groms (kids) so when you hit your 7th birthday its on!
Can I bring my medical equipment down to the lesson with me?
100%. In fact, on your registration form we ask you if you have any medical requirements. The coaches always take down a waterproof bag for you to put anything that you may need while on the lesson.
Do I have to carry my boards from the shop to the beach?
No. We have a lock up just a few minutes walk from the shop, which is a stones throw away from the surf. From here you will collect your surfboards and walk down to the surfing area. If you want you can bring some flip-flops to walk down the road to the beach from the shop.
I'm scared of stepping on a weeverfish - Are they dangerous?
Ah, the dreaded weeverfish. Yes, they do lurk, particularly in the summer months at low tide, and some people are unfortunate to stand on them which is more annoying than painful. They are not particularly dangerous and if you do get stung then putting your foot in hot water for 5 to 10 minutes normally does the trick. We would say if you are concerned about stepping on one then let us know and we can give you a pair of boots. But would it stop us from ever going surfing? Absolutely not.
Is there somewhere to grab a coffee or a bite to eat before or after my lesson?
Perranporth is your typical seaside town, with a wide range of places to eat and drink and just about anything else you may need for a great day on the beach. Just make sure you have enough time to take it all in and relax on one of Cornwall’s biggest and most beautiful beaches at over 2.2 miles long.
Is the beach dog friendly?
Yes, in fact he whole of Perranporth is very dog friendly and dogs are permitted on the beach all year round. However, during the months of July and August, your furry friends will need to be on a short lead on the main part of the beach but are allowed to run wild past this point.
Do I need to be a competent swimmer?
No, not for beginner/ improver lessons as we only go out to waist to chest depth water. In fact, we have had some people who cannot swim at all. However, if you are worried about this then perhaps you would be more suited to a Private lesson with your very own surf coach. Either way we would love to hear from you.
How can you assure that we will be safe?
We take safety very seriously at stoked surf school and keeping everyone safe aswell as having fun is our top priority. All of our coaches are qualified lifeguards and ISA / Surfing England coaches. On top of this the surf school is accredited by Surfing England which is the national governing body for surfing. Finally, all of the coaches are competent surfers with many years of water knowledge and experience. On top of this Perranporth is patrolled by RNLI lifeguards from April to October so yes I would say that you are in safe hands.

If you want a Surf school in Cornwall…this is the place to go! Julian and his team have nailed it! This place is the best. Julian is always helpful and on hand and so relaxed and welcoming. Had a lesson last year and then returned for another this weekendand it was like I hadn’t been away. I had Matt take me on a 1-1 lesson again. Had Matt last summer and we picked up where we left off. This time he took a board out too so we could get out back and start working on catching green waves. Lots to learn and build on but as always Matt was great. Great coaching style, personable and clearly knows his stuff. Pitched the lesson just right for what I wanted and despite the first part of the lesson being a bit low on wave count we used the opportunity to talk about what to look out for, how to identify worthwhile waves etc and then we chatted a bit about different types of wave breaks and overall I came away with a whole new lot of information to add in to the mix. Second half the waves came and it was all go and felt a huge improvement with just a few tweaks. Seen a lot of improvements since my last visit too. The changing area round the back has now been transformed and is a great escape to get changed/washed down in. My only complaint is that I live too far away to get here more often. Hands down Julian is running a great set up with a great team around it and they are smashing it! Can’t recommend them enough

So much fun! We have just came back from a brilliant weekend in Perranporth thanks to Stoked Surf School! We are both completely new to surfing so were a little bit apprehensive but as soon as we arrived at the surf shop Julian's warm and friendly welcome put us at ease. We had a 2hr beginner lesson on the Saturday where we learned the fundamentals and how to stay safe in the water. Our instructors were brilliant and were very encouraging. Most importantly, the lesson was so much fun! We then hired surf boards from Stoked on the Sunday and spent the day practicing what we learned. Again, the team were absolutely lovely. We haven't been back home 24hrs and we are already planning our next trip back to Cornwall for more lessons with Stoked! I strongly recommend this surf school.

A really positive experience : ) We booked two private lessons for our teens this week, whilst staying in Perranporth. Julian the boss was super helpful and Abe that took the lessons was really nice too. Our kids thoroughly enjoyed the experience, they had 2 hours each time in the water and learnt all of the basics as well as standing & turns on the board. They can't wait to do again on our next visit, hopefully in October. I might even join them!

You never know when once experience can change your life course….. I can’t recommend Stoked Surf School in Perranporth enough! We booked very last minute on our Easter holiday. Matthew was absolutely brilliant with our two boys. He was encouraging, supportive, fun and a brilliant teacher. Both boys came away wishing we lived in the area so they could take regular lessons. They are already asking us when we can go back. In the words of my eldest son ‘it was the absolute best day of our trip.’ My younger son’s answer to the question, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ in his Year 6 leavers book is quite simply ‘A surfer.’ You never know when once experience or meeting one person can change your life direction. Now to move out of Oxfordshire so we can live near the waves ????! The River Thames doesn’t quite suffice….
